چکیده

1.1 Scientific discovery Early scientific milestones in filariasis history abroad include the following. 1863: Demarquay in Paris found microfilariae in hydrocele liquid of a Cuban. 1866: Wucherer found microfilariae in chyluria. 1872: Lewis found microfilariae in blood. 1877: Bancroft found a female adult filarial worm in the ulcer of lymph node of the arm. 1877: Manson found microfilariae in the stomach of bloodsucked mosquito, which was practically the “birth” of medical entomology. 1879: Manson found microfilarial nocturnal periodicity. 1888: Sibthorpe found male adult worms.

The epidemiology of lymphatic filariasis in Ghana, explained by the possible existence of two strains of Wuchereria bancrofti

INTRODUCTION Lymphatic filariasis is a debilitating disease caused by the filarial worm Wuchereria bancrofti. It is earmarked for elimination by the year 2020 through the Global Program for the Elimination of LF (GPELF). In Ghana, mass treatment has been on-going since the year 2000. Earlier studies have revealed differing epidemiology of LF in the North and South of Ghana. This study was there...

Operational research to support and enhance lymphatic filariasis control efforts in Eastern and Southern Africa (09-096LIFE)

Executive summary The project aimed to support lymphatic filariasis (LF) control efforts in Zambia and Tanzania, through operational research and capacity building. It was carried out in close collaboration with the national LF control programmes, and with locally registered PhD and Master students. Much new insight has been gained on the geographical distribution and epidemiology of LF in Zamb...

EPIFIL: the development of an age-structured model for describing the transmission dynamics and control of lymphatic filariasis.

Mathematical models of transmission dynamics of infectious diseases provide a useful tool for investigating the impact of community based control measures. Previously, we used a dynamic (constant force-of-infection) model for lymphatic filariasis to describe observed patterns of infection and disease in endemic communities. In this paper, we expand the model to examine the effects of control op...

Filariasis and its control in Fujian, China.

Epidemiological survey of filariasis in Fujian Province, China showed that malayan filariasis, transmitted by Anopheles lesteri anthropophagus was mainly distributed in the northwest part and bancroftian filariasis with Culex quinquefasciatus as vector, in middle and south coastal regions. Both species of filariae showed typical nocturnal periodicity. Involvement of the extremities was not unco...
